Chapter 6
Son left Kara sleeping, had a shower and two cups of coffee and he was already outside waiting for Tana when he pulled up at twenty past seven so that he would not beep his horn and wake up Kara. They drove to the Chaweng police station and while driving they went over the previous dayâs events and began planning what they should do that day. When they got to the station Tana dropped him at the front entrance so that he could go and see Colonel Saetang while he went and parked the car and then went to buy their usual morning coffees.
Son knocked on Colonel Saetangâs door and entered before the colonel had the chance to tell him to enter. Colonel Saetang was in his usual position with a copy of the Bangkok Post in his hand, feet on the desk and a cup of coffee at his elbow.
âYou wanted to see me colonel?â
âYes I did but that was yesterday. Where have you been?â
âI had to go to Khanom yesterday to investigate the bar-girl that went missing from The Naughty but Nice Bar in Lamai. We found her shacked up in a hotel with her new French boyfriend and she is fine.â
âYes I know, whatâs his name? that computer nerd police officer told me. I phoned you three times yesterday and you never answered your phone.â
âThe nerd's name is Lance Corporal Niran Chanthara and there was probably no phone signal on the ferry; you know what itâs like crossing the Gulf of Thailand on a ferry you either get a weak signal or no signal at all.â
Saetang glared at Son, he was never sure how to take him. He was always respectful but he often thought that the lieutenant was winding him up.
âThe German embassy has been on the phone to me constantly about Manfred Schuster since his body was found. They have ordered a full autopsy and are thinking about sending over a German police officer to liaise with us.â
âWell they are wasting their money on a full autopsy; his head was bashed in with a rock, end of story. As for sending over a detective to liaise with us tell them that he will have to go into quarantine for fourteen days the same as everyone else who arrives in Thailand. By that time I hope that I will have the case wrapped up.â
The colonel thought about this and then said; âI want you to leave the investigation into the murdered bar-girl and the missing bar girl on the back burner or hand it to someone else; the Schuster case is to take top priority. Do you understand Lieutenant Sinuan?â
Son smiled at the colonel; âUnfortunately sir the murdered girl is part of the Schuster investigation. Manfred Shuster spent the night with Angel or Nangfah Saengsawang which is her real name, in her condo the night before she died and he was killed the following day.â
Colonel Saetang nearly choked on his coffee; âWhy didnât you tell
